‘Sex and the City’ Star Sarah Jessica Parker Welcomes Twins

Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick just welcomed twin daughters on Monday. The twins, Marion Loretta Elwell (5lbs.) and Tabitha Hodge (6 lbs.), were born at 3:58 pm in Ohio via a surrogate.

The babies are doing beautifully,” Parker’s publicist said in a statement to TVGuide.com. “The entire family is over the moon.”

“Both Hodge and Elwell are family names on Parker’s side,” the statement added.

Parker and Broderick confirmed they were expecting twin daughters by a surrogate mother in April after they struggled to conceive naturally. Earlier this year, the said surrogate mother also became the target of media frenzy when two Ohio police officers allegedly burglarized the surrogate mother’s home so they could sell photos and other information to a tabloid.

“We didn’t expect it. I think after a certain amount of time, you tend to hold your hopes at bay a bit so as not to be disappointed,” the Sex and the City actress said back then. “One really would have been thrilling and we would’ve felt incredibly lucky. And two was a comedy!

Parker catapulted to fame as Carrie Bradshaw on the HBO television series Sex and the City, for which she won four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Emmy Awards. She played the same role in the feature film version of the show, which was released on May 30, 2008. Broderick, on the other hand, became popular for his roles in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Godzilla and WarGames.

The couple married on May 19, 1997 and has a son, James Wilkie Broderick, born on October 28, 2002.

“James is really excited. He’s very much ready to be an older brother,” Parker said. “I think it gives him a great sense of pride. It’s wonderful and I just hope for their safe arrival.”

‘Sex And The City’ star set to wed

Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixon is set to tie the knot with partner Christine Marinoni.

The actress was seen showing off an engagement ring at an Action = Marriage Equality rally in New York, where gay weddings are not yet legal.

Cynthia – who plays Miranda in the ‘Sex And The City‘ franchise – started dating education activist Christine in January 2004.

Prior to that, the 43-year-old was in a 15-year relationship with English professor Danny Mozes. The pair have two children.

How big will the next Sex and the City movie be?

The first Sex and the City movie wasn’t just a hit. It was a big, big hit. The worldwide box office was $400 million, which even in today’s inflated dollars is an awful lot of cash. Therefore, it was no surprise that New Line has green lighted a sequel to the feature based on the HBO series for release in 2010.

Debra wasn’t thrilled with more Sex features, but I have faith in Michael Patrick King. However, there is another issue; while all the ladies are inked for the Sex and the City sequel, Chris Noth is not, which may — or may not — be a “big” deal.

Reports claim that Noth is balking at playing Big again because of scheduling conflicts, but the true conflict is money. It’s not unusual that he would be looking for a more this go-round, especially in light of the film’s boffo success.

Here’s the thing, though; Sex and the City doesn’t need Mr. Big. During the HBO run, Carrie had a variety of boyfriends, even though she always drifted back to Big. But after the way Carrie was kicked around by Big in the first movie, including being left at the altar, it might be more realistic for her to return the favor.

Couldn’t Michael Patrick King choose to liberate Carrie once and for all from the spell of Mr. Big by dumping him at the beginning of the next movie? There would be a lot of women — and SATC fans in general — who’d applaud that.

It would leave the door open for either a new man for Carrie, or maybe a return of Aidan, the always wonderful John Corbett, or what about The Russian (Mikhail Baryshnivov) or Jack Berger (Ron Livingston). There’s a wealth of possibilities for Carrie, so Noth might not be a necessity.

“Dancing With the Stars” finds a star in “Sex and the City”

To fill gaps caused by injuries, ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” has turned to two reality favorites.

Bachelor” alumna Melissa Rycroft and Holly Madison of “The Girls Next Door” each had less than a week to prepare for the ballroom contest.

Madison acknowledged that she was winging it when she stepped on the dance floor Monday night for the “Dancing” season premiere.” She had five days to prepare. But judge Bruno Tonioli told Madison, “There is hope. Keep working.”

Rycroft had just two days to practice and was the last celebrity to take the dance floor. She looked terrific, and the judges were mostly complimentary. Think about the week this young woman has had — being rejected on “The Bachelor” last week, coming back this week on ABC’s most popular series. The woman has poise.

The two women replaced singer Jewel and “Access Hollywood” host Nancy O’Dell, who had to bow out because of injuries in training. But the “Dancing” producers and ABC seem to have done another inspired job of casting.

The night’s revelation was actor Gilles Marini, who was the naked neighbor in the “Sex and the City” movie. Marini (pictured) and proud partner Cheryl Burke delivered a scorching cha cha cha that won judges’ raves.

The judges also praised the waltz from gymnast Shawn Johnson and partner Mark Ballas. Shawn, who is only 17, came through with a disciplined, elegant performance. Is it any wonder she’s considered the front-runner? “Fantastic,” Len Goodman said. But Shawn said her gymnastic skill was no advantage on the dance floor.

The night’s most memorable line came from “Jackass” star Steve-0: “I want to put my foot in the waltz’s butt.” Anyone who thought he’d be terrible or silly was in for a surprise. He really tried — waltzing to the “Godfather” theme — and blossomed with help from understanding partner Lacey Schwimmer.

Steve Wozniak was game and charming on his cha cha cha, but the results were disastrous. Denise Richards was awkward on her cha cha cha — she looked utterly frightened. Rodeo star Ty Murray was lost on his dance.  Football great Lawrence Taylor smiled through obvious nerves. Belinda Carlisle looked wonderful but lacked fluidity and fretted about throwing up. Thank goodness, she didn’t hurl.

More potential was evident from comedian David Alan Grier, whose expressions often upstaged his dance moves, and rapper Lil’ Kim, who knows how to shake it. Real-life couple Chuck Wicks and Julianne Hough were adorable and could go far.

“Sex and the City” creator Star reunites with HBO

Darren Star, creator of one of HBO’s signature series, “Sex and the City” has inked a two-year first-look deal with the pay cable network.

Under the pact, he will create a series, his first solo creation in almost a decade. He also will shepherd comedy and drama projects from other writers.

“They say you can never go home again, but with this deal at HBO, I feel I am,” Star said. “I can say from my fortunate experience that there is nothing in the world quite like having a series on HBO.”

Star’s experience at HBO was mostly with the network’s previous regime — on “Sex” and on Star’s most recent project there, “Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl,” which was put in development by Chris Albrecht, who left his post as chairman and CEO in 2007. But Star said he already has developed great rapport with HBO’s new programing executives.

In addition to the Emmy-winning “Sex,” Star’s series creator credits include Fox’s “Beverly Hills, 90210” and its spinoff, “Melrose Place” — both enjoying a second life with their CW updates — as well as the critically praised WB comedy “Grosse Pointe.”

EW DVD Review: “Sex And The City Movie”

I was never a huge fan of the TV show “Sex and the City.” Not that it wasn’t smart and clever and funny and all that - it probably was. I just never got swept up in it. I watched it a few times and listening to women talk about shoes and labels and guys’ flaws in bed and badmouthing other women wasn’t my idea of a good time.

So I popped the “Sex and the City” DVD in with more a sense of obligation than high hopes, and you know what, I kind of liked it.

Even if you’ve never seen the show before, it doesn’t take long to figure out what each characters all about because they’re like giant cartoons. Macy’s Day parade floats really.

Cynthia Nixon plays Miranda, the tough-as-nails type-A personality trying to balance it all. Kristin Davis’s Charlotte is the prissy Upper East Side prude who’s blessed with good fortune. Kim Cattrall’s Samantha is the drag queen-looking one with an insatiable sweet tooth for hunky guys. And Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw is, of course, the constantly-jilted writer who’s the glue that holds the posse together.

Together, they take on the world like mascaraed, Missoni-clad musketeers. And now that they’ve been bumped up to feature-film length, their problems are all supersized too.

Miranda and Steve have broken up, Charlotte’s got an adopted kid, Samantha is feeling weighed down by the ball and chain of monogamy out in Los Angeles and Carrie gets engaged to Big, whose feet are extremely cold.

Some of these storylines are more engrossing than others, but the stuff that fans of the show love are all there: the labels, including a Louis Vuitton bag that may as well be the fifth lead, the painfully-coined catchphrases, the four friends’ sisterly bond.

Sure, maybe the “Sex and the City” movie doesn’t feel like a lot more than just watching two hours’ worth of episodes of the TV show. But now that it’s gone, maybe that’s not such a bad thing.

Now for a look at what else is new on DVD: in “Iron Man,” Robert Downey, Jr. plays a weapons mogul turned superhero; in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” Jason Segal is a sad sack trying to get over an ex; and in “Taxi to the Dark Side,” an Oscar-winning documentary takes a look at a forgotten victim in the war on terror.

Review: ‘Sex and the City’

To put it mildly, I am not an aficionado of the HBO TV series “Sex and the City.” For all I know, Manolo Blahnik could be the name of a toreador from Latvia. This qualifies me as either the best or the worst person to review the new movie.

But connoisseurship is a much overrated quality in critics, so I’ll make the case here that by approaching this material fresh – i.e., as someone who has never attended a “viewing party” for the TV show – I’m giving it the fairest of shakes.

Still, you have to wonder: Do even SATC fanatics crave a glorified TV episode, and a rather middling one at that? The TV’s show’s creative honcho, writer-director Michael Patrick King, has called this 2-1/2-hour movie “The Lord of the Engagement Rings.” I’m not sure he’s being ironic. It reportedly features over 300 makeovers among the four female leads. (Does that include all those strappy sandals?) At times, the movie resembled nothing so much as Kabuki with Cosmos.

King kicks off the movie with uncharacteristically fast-paced updates. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is back from Paris and big with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), with whom she’s scouting a Fifth Avenue penthouse (her fantasy aerie, his money). Overworked Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is ensconced in Brooklyn with her guilt-ridden (don’t ask) husband Steve (Dave Eigenberg) and young son.

Charlotte (Kristin Davis), is guilt-ridden because she and her loving hubby Harry (Evan Handler) and adopted baby girl from China are so, well – happy. (Even more good stuff happens to her in the course of the movie. What’s a poor girl to do?)

Samantha (Kim Cattrall) has conquered her cancer and heads up a talent agency in Los Angeles where she handles, if that’s the right word, her hunky live-in boyfriend Smith (Jason Lewis). She has a difficult time committing to one man – even one who appears to have been chiseled by Rodin – and is forever flying to New York to provide aid and comfort and costume changes.

There’s also a welcome new addition: Jennifer Hudson as Carrie’s gal Friday. She’s younger than the leading ladies (that’s good for audience demographics) and African-American (previously the show was whiter than an ice floe).

Thanks to the show’s huge following and its lucrative afterlife on DVD and in syndication, SATC still has its rabid followers. It is even, heaven help us, iconic. Artifacts from the show are housed in the Smithsonian. But is it such a big deal anymore to hear women talk about sex as crudely as men do? This was always a prime reason for the TV show’s bond-a-thon appeal – this and all the hearts and flowers that the cast threw at each other.

The series functioned primarily as a giddy, foul-mouthed soap opera for women over 30; it was lapped up as a liberation from good taste. But there was nothing especially feminist about the show. (And yes, I caught up with some old episodes, OK?) The same is true of the movie. The SATC universe is indubitably man-centric.

The commercial success of “The Devil Wears Prada” is largely the reason this movie was made. (An attempt four years ago was sunk by contractual disputes.) It’s wonderful that films specifically for and about women are being made – especially women over 30, which in Hollywood years is something like 80. But the inevitable (I think) success of SATC will likely just lead to SATC II and assorted knockoffs.

Still, as gender-segregated experiences go, SATC is preferable to, say, that idiotic beefcake epic “300.” The amusing thing about SATC is that it objectifies – fetishizes – men in much the same way that most male-oriented movies objectify women. This is poetic, or prosaic, justice indeed. Maybe one day both sides of the gender gap can meet in the middle and distinguish each other as, you know, human.

In the meantime, can someone please explain to me what that thing is called on Carrie’s head that looks like a butterfly-encrusted corsage trapped in a terrarium? Grade: B-. (Rated R for strong sexual content, graphic nudity, and language.)

Miss Pettigrew gives Sex And The City a run for its money

Marilyn Monroe meets Mary Poppins in this sophisticated little chick flick. Sparklingly adapted from Winifred Watson’s beloved cult novel, it sees downtrodden, middle-aged governess Miss Pettigrew (dowdy-haired Frances McDormand) about to hit the soup line unless she can bag a last, long-shot job.

It’s PA to young, dizzy, mink-for-brains nightclub singer Delysia Lafosse (a perfect Amy Adams), whose main talent is between her silk sheets. If Miss P, a spinster vicar’s daughter, is to negotiate this saucy new high society world, she must finally seize the day.

McDormand brings a Chaplinesque pathos to this snappy period comedy. Fabulous frocks, tasty men, female bonding, art deco apartments to die for; it’s like Sex And The City set in 1930s London. I could have happily watched it for hours…
