Review: ‘Sex and the City’

To put it mildly, I am not an aficionado of the HBO TV series “Sex and the City.” For all I know, Manolo Blahnik could be the name of a toreador from Latvia. This qualifies me as either the best or the worst person to review the new movie.

But connoisseurship is a much overrated quality in critics, so I’ll make the case here that by approaching this material fresh – i.e., as someone who has never attended a “viewing party” for the TV show – I’m giving it the fairest of shakes.

Still, you have to wonder: Do even SATC fanatics crave a glorified TV episode, and a rather middling one at that? The TV’s show’s creative honcho, writer-director Michael Patrick King, has called this 2-1/2-hour movie “The Lord of the Engagement Rings.” I’m not sure he’s being ironic. It reportedly features over 300 makeovers among the four female leads. (Does that include all those strappy sandals?) At times, the movie resembled nothing so much as Kabuki with Cosmos.

King kicks off the movie with uncharacteristically fast-paced updates. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is back from Paris and big with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), with whom she’s scouting a Fifth Avenue penthouse (her fantasy aerie, his money). Overworked Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is ensconced in Brooklyn with her guilt-ridden (don’t ask) husband Steve (Dave Eigenberg) and young son.

Charlotte (Kristin Davis), is guilt-ridden because she and her loving hubby Harry (Evan Handler) and adopted baby girl from China are so, well – happy. (Even more good stuff happens to her in the course of the movie. What’s a poor girl to do?)

Samantha (Kim Cattrall) has conquered her cancer and heads up a talent agency in Los Angeles where she handles, if that’s the right word, her hunky live-in boyfriend Smith (Jason Lewis). She has a difficult time committing to one man – even one who appears to have been chiseled by Rodin – and is forever flying to New York to provide aid and comfort and costume changes.

There’s also a welcome new addition: Jennifer Hudson as Carrie’s gal Friday. She’s younger than the leading ladies (that’s good for audience demographics) and African-American (previously the show was whiter than an ice floe).

Thanks to the show’s huge following and its lucrative afterlife on DVD and in syndication, SATC still has its rabid followers. It is even, heaven help us, iconic. Artifacts from the show are housed in the Smithsonian. But is it such a big deal anymore to hear women talk about sex as crudely as men do? This was always a prime reason for the TV show’s bond-a-thon appeal – this and all the hearts and flowers that the cast threw at each other.

The series functioned primarily as a giddy, foul-mouthed soap opera for women over 30; it was lapped up as a liberation from good taste. But there was nothing especially feminist about the show. (And yes, I caught up with some old episodes, OK?) The same is true of the movie. The SATC universe is indubitably man-centric.

The commercial success of “The Devil Wears Prada” is largely the reason this movie was made. (An attempt four years ago was sunk by contractual disputes.) It’s wonderful that films specifically for and about women are being made – especially women over 30, which in Hollywood years is something like 80. But the inevitable (I think) success of SATC will likely just lead to SATC II and assorted knockoffs.

Still, as gender-segregated experiences go, SATC is preferable to, say, that idiotic beefcake epic “300.” The amusing thing about SATC is that it objectifies – fetishizes – men in much the same way that most male-oriented movies objectify women. This is poetic, or prosaic, justice indeed. Maybe one day both sides of the gender gap can meet in the middle and distinguish each other as, you know, human.

In the meantime, can someone please explain to me what that thing is called on Carrie’s head that looks like a butterfly-encrusted corsage trapped in a terrarium? Grade: B-. (Rated R for strong sexual content, graphic nudity, and language.)

Miss Pettigrew gives Sex And The City a run for its money

Marilyn Monroe meets Mary Poppins in this sophisticated little chick flick. Sparklingly adapted from Winifred Watson’s beloved cult novel, it sees downtrodden, middle-aged governess Miss Pettigrew (dowdy-haired Frances McDormand) about to hit the soup line unless she can bag a last, long-shot job.

It’s PA to young, dizzy, mink-for-brains nightclub singer Delysia Lafosse (a perfect Amy Adams), whose main talent is between her silk sheets. If Miss P, a spinster vicar’s daughter, is to negotiate this saucy new high society world, she must finally seize the day.

McDormand brings a Chaplinesque pathos to this snappy period comedy. Fabulous frocks, tasty men, female bonding, art deco apartments to die for; it’s like Sex And The City set in 1930s London. I could have happily watched it for hours…

Let there be light

Hey guys and gals, have you seen ‘Let there be light’ from season six of the Sex and the city? This is the wonderful episode, quite entertaining and funny as well. I watched it once on TV and today I searched it again from here. You know sex and the city is a role model for me and my friends off course.

The show keeps on giving us amazing ideas about planning our parties. In this episode too the girls given us idea of playing blind fold and we did exactly the same at party and had a lot of fun. In my gang you will find many crazy fans of sex and the city, guys are like who carry on comparing their girl friends with SATC girls and make them jealous by praising the attitudes of the four girls in the show. On the other hand girls too are not far behind; they equally follow up the styles and trends of these girls to impress their men. Normally they fight with each other too over the competition of resembling more with the SATC gals. If one follows Carrie’s style then the other one won’t be tolerated in the group for doing the same, she has to choose Samantha instead.

Anyways I was talking about the blindfold game, you know in the shopping mall girls decide to play blindfold as a lady suggested to Charlotte to stay busy with the game to release the tension of pregnancy. While they are doing the same, Carrie is blindfolded and hits a rack over there as she receives a call. On the other hand Samantha goes to Richard once again and realizes that he is definitely not the right man for her and apologizes to Smith for doing this to him.

Carrie is dating Petrovsky and is overly impressed of him and wants to stay with him for long. But only the time will tell whether she succeeds or not. There was lot of drama in this episode but blended with fun.
Well it made my day, you guys too check it out and try some ideas from it, your life will rock.

Teen star too is huge fan of Sex and the City

Hey buddies, I know you didn’t get which teen star I am talking about. Well not a very difficult guess. One teen star who is most popular among the teen stars and remains in controversies and gets a chance to share her likes and dislikes or you can say ambitions with the media. Ahaaa, so you got it. It’s Hannah Montana. She has just told to the tv news reporters that her ambition is to work in younger version of Sex and the city. Obviously she will seek a younger version because the mature version has already broken the records.
Well she is of opinion that young girls too fall in love at such a young age in the real life, then why not a Sex and the city can be prepared for young people. Well, I think her bold image suits the Carrie’s character. So if she gets a chance work in sex and the city kind of movie or a show, then she must do that kind of role. I think Hannah now wants to do mature roles, after being in controversies for a long period.

The thing is, the standards sex and the city have build up for other shows. Everybody is following their trend of transforming soap into movie. And every star wants to work in sex and the city kind of movie and wants to play the same roles. Seriously, sex and the city has become a role model for all the TV show producers, as well as Stars. But do you think the same success can be achieved. Never give up hopes guys, after all, history repeats itself.

Actually it was closer to the real lives of people and contained fun what people seek from a three hour movie. It had great creative concentration upon everything from clothing to interiors, from story line to best acting and a fun filled and bold life style and the concept of living life at one’s own terms. These things made the SATC the most successful and popular among all.

The star of TV’s Sex and the City

Sarah Jessica was born in Nelsonville, Ohio on March 25th, 1965. Her parents divorced when she was one and her mother later remarried. A born entertainer, she appeared in her first television special, The Little Match Girl, when she was eight years old. Parker studied ballet with the Cincinnati Ballet and American Ballet Theater, and worked on her singing with the Metropolitan Opera. At age 8, she saw an ad in the local newspaper announcing an audition for a production of HC Andersen’s “The Little Match Girl”. Sarah convinced her mother to allow her to try-out, and she got the part. Sarah, who grew up in a family with limited money, welcomed the opportunity to make some money of her own.

When Sarah Jessica was 11, her stepfather decided to move the family to New York and start a trucking business of his own. Sarah and her brother, Timothy Britten Parker, soon began to win parts in various on and off Broadway productions. Sarah found herself playing Broadway’s third Annie, and soon began taking classes in order to save her voice. Growing up, Sarah danced with the National American Ballet Theater and sang with the Metropolitan Opera. In 1979, Sarah got a role in the feature film “Rich Kids”, opposite John Lithgow. Three years later, she gained national recognition, starring in the short lived sitcom “Square Pegs”. A few motion pictures followed throughout the 80’s, as well as a couple of TV films and series. The 1984 Musical Drama “Footloose”, co-starring Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer, brought Sarah a “Young Artist Award” for Best Young Actress.

Sarah’s major breakthrough was in 1991, when she starred in Steve Martin’s major comedy “L.A. Story”. Her hilarious performance as the gum popping valley girl, had critics standing and cheering everywhere. The 1992 hit comedy “Honeymoon in Vegas” brought Sarah a one year relationship with co-star Nicolas Cage. Some time later, Sarah had a brief fling with the late John F. Kennedy Jr. and became an attractive tabloid newsmaker. In November 1991, Sarah met Matthew Broderick, who, at the time, was directing her brother Timothy in a play. Three months later, they had their first date, and the couple moved in together in 1992. Five years later, Sarah announced her desire to marry Broderick, live on the David Letterman show. Directly after the show, Matthew proposed to Sarah, and three months later, on May 19, 1997, they married. Sarah and Mat currently live in Soho, New York, with their border collie, Sally.

With her sexy AND funny image in tow, Sarah Jessica kept herself BUSY on the big screen, working with Nicolas Cage and James Caan in Honeymoon in Vegas, Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus, Bruce Willis in Striking Distance, Ed Wood with Johnny Depp, Miami Rhapsody with Antonio Banderas, The First Wives Club, Extreme Measures (with Hugh Grant and Gene Hackman) and Mars Attacks!. Not content to work solely on the big screen, Sarah Jessica squeezed in several Broadway and Off-Broadway productions as well as starting her sexy HBO series Sex and the City in 1998. She won a Golden Globe for that role in 2000. Sex and the City’s successful run came to an end on February 22nd, 2004, amid much media hoopla. She still managed to get some more film work done, appearing opposite Brendan Fraser in Dudley Do-Right and Alec Baldwin in State and Main.

I like Carrie Bradshaw

All the four sex and the city girls are worth appreciation and each one is better than the later. But which is my favorite is Carrie Bradshaw played by Sarah Jessica Parker. In fact I like Carrie more than the Sarah Jessica parker herself. The character has been portrayed such beautifully that you just can’t ignore her presence on the show. Moreover among all the other characters she is closer to a real life girl. Like, she has a frustrated heart, seeking faithful and committed love.

Being a writer, she is bold enough to say anything about delicate topics. Her character has been painted as a solid decision maker. As when she gets involved with Aiden but couldn’t keep herself away from her old love Mr. Big, she causes Aiden a heart break without much consideration. She is such a bold girl who lives her life on her own terms whether these are her love interests or her profession. She carries on the relationship with Big even when he’s got married and is not ready for commitment. I love these things about Carrie that she’s spontaneous professionally as well as personally, nothing seems like created as it happens in everybody’s life. However high she is professionally, but still owns a simple heart, which is in search of true love.

When she breaks up with both Aiden and Big, then she concentrates upon her career and succeeds. You know she is called fashion Chameleon in sex and the city. Carrie’s character has made her different identity among youngsters as she is a fashion icon for her unique kind of jewellery and designer dresses suitable with the occasions. Her flower pins, name plate necklaces, newsboy hats and baguette bags created craze among gals. After sex and the city every teenager started following Carrie’s style this is the impact of her character as far as my observation is concerned I think she is the most popular character among teenagers from the four girls.

Actor Chris Noth talks about Sex and the City in Sydney

Sex and the City star Chris Noth, in Sydney to act as LG brand ambassador for the launch of their new range of touch screen phones, says he’s also up for a sequel to the hugely successful film if they asked him.

Gallery: Sex in the Sydney

“They haven’t talked about it yet but it’s all up to Michael Patrick King - if he wants to write another one we’d love to do it,” he said.

“It was a great experience and we had a lot of fun making it.”

In depth: Sex and the City, the movie

Noth also said he wished a few more men would get out and see the Sex and the City film.

“From the reports that I’ve been getting it is all females in the audience and I know it is a movie that attracts women but guys are allowed to go to this movie just so you know in Australia,’’ he said.

“Guys, you won’t be persecuted if you go to this movie.”

Noth says stepping back into Mr Big’s shoes for the Sex and the City film was a pleasure. “It was no sweat - it was fantastic,’’ he said.

“I didn’t really with struggle with it - it felt pretty natural.”

The LA-based actor also said he’s been happy with the response from the fans.

“The fans have been incredible,’’ he said. “They’ve all been very polite and I couldn’t ask for more.”

Has SATC taught him anything about women?

“You don’t take cues from the entertainment business to learn something as complicated as the female species,’’ he said.

“One of the things I liked about it apart from the laughs and the fashion, is the friendship and forgiveness which were underplayed in the movie.

“People come back together because they loved each other enough to forgive and you can laugh along the way which is what makes it work.”

Noth will feature in the LG advertising campaign for their range of mobiles which include a styish model called the Secret but he describes himself as the least tech-savvy person around.

“I’m not exactly tech savvy but we like to know that it’s there and usable for people who didn’t get past fifth grade math.”

Noth also laughed off the suggestion of a Law and Order movie based on the other popular TV show in which he stars.

“The problem with Law and Order is that it’s on three times a day six days a week. There are three different shows. I can barely watch it and I’m on it,” he said.

And what about that drink? Noth explain there are plenty of people who offer to buy him a drink especially the Cosmopolitan made popular by Sex and The City.

“No, get me a beer, I’m thirsty. They are actually very tasty but it’s a sweet drink and it’s for girls not guys.”
